Photos from SyFy’s new Riverworld Series

Photos from SyFy

Here’s a look at SyFy’s upcoming Riverworld series. Looks interesting – the costumes appear to be a mix of modern day fashion, combined with robed knights and blue aliens. Not to mention a young-looking Mark Twain.

I’ve read these books and thought they were fantastic. From what I gather, SyFy is only loosely basing their series on the novels. They’re adding new characters and changing the story quite a bit. Though Mark Twain was in the books, and he’s the MAN.

The basic premise is that a large group of people in history die – then strangely wake up on a new world. I hope SyFy does this with style.

Here’s the official premise:

When American war zone journalist Matt Ellman (Tahmoh Penikett, Battlestar Galactica) and his fiancée, Jessie Machalan (Laura Vandervoort, Smallville), are killed in an explosion, Matt awakens, separated from Jessie, on the banks of a river snaking endlessly across a mysterious new plane of existence. On Riverworld, everyone who has ever lived on Earth, ever soul throughout time, has been reborn along the banks of a seemingly endless river. Determined to locate Jessie, Matt aligns with Tomoe (Jeananne Goossen, Falcon Beach) , a 13th century female warrior, Allegra (Romina D’Ugo, Hairspray), a 15th century courtesan of shifting alliances, and American novelist and Riverboat captain Samuel Clemens (Mark Deklin, Justice), better known as Mark Twain. With a full crew of adventurers, they embark upriver to understand where they are, why they are here, and to what unknowable end the river winds.

Toshiba Starts War between Normal and Boring

Here’s a funny set of videos from Toshiba’s viral marketing reps. They’ve come up with a clever idea to pit the town of Normal, Illinois against Boring, Oregon. These are real towns!

The first video above is a good spoof on LARPing. I think Toshiba could have done more with their costumes, but it’s still funny.

Here are a couple more videos so you can see the fun these two towns are having. You can watch all the videos on their Vimeo channel and find out more about Toshiba’s contest at

Cool Vampire Inspired Stuff

Recently I posted about some clever advertising targeting using real products to market to a popular, albeit fictional, target audience…vampires. But today I want to highlight actual products inspired by the vampire culture craze.

Let’s start with Tru Blood. It’s now more than a fictional, plasma infused beverage for vampires, inspired by HBO’s sexy vampire series, “True Blood.” The drink, announced at the San Diego Comic Con forum, should be in stores by September 10th in time for the last episode of season two.

The Tru Blood web site describes the beverage as a “uniquely carbonated, slightly tart, lightly sweet blood orange drink.”

Reviews of the beverage are positive. The folks at NBC News sucked down some of the liquid and had this to say…”Sinfully delicious,” “Fruity and sweet, with a nice fizzy bite at the end”.

At $4.00 a bottle, it had better have a sinfully delicious bite cuz I can only afford to try it once. Regardless, it will make a cool collector’s item.

Next on my list is vampire inspired décor. These rooms are tasteful and lush and might well induce vampire activity. You can almost envision your favorite “Twilight” or “True Blood” vampire lounging around in one of these darkly attractive rooms pointing his come hither finger at you (and on that note…I think I better phone home and have my husband buy some red paint and bed covers):

Ah, and let’s not forget novelty décor…a blood oozing lamp, bloody footprint carpet and a blood bath shower curtain, all freaky enough to scare the kids but cool enough that you’d still want to put it in your house for a while…at least until the first nightmare:

I can’t wait to see what other vampire related products are rolled out in the near future…a genetically engineered Bill Compton wouldn’t disappoint me.

The Rorschach Controversy

The Rorschach Controversy

Here’s is an interesting bit of news. The scientific community is buzzing about the psychological inkblot test known as the Rorschach test. Many psychologists are angry because Wikipedia has published the Rorschach images, and they claim Wikipedia has ruined the test by giving patients the answers.

The Rorschach Controversy If you’ve never seen the movie Watchmen, one of the superheroes is named Rorschach, and he wears a mask with inkblots that constantly shift into patterns resembling the real Rorschach test.

During a scene in the movie, a psychologist shows Rorschach these images, but Rorschach knows how to answer.

Doctor: “Tell me what you see.”
Rorschach: “A pretty butterfly.”
Doctor: “What about now? What do you see here?”
Rorschach: “Some nice flowers.”

The Rorschach ControversyThe Rorschach Controversy

I guess I’m kind of wondering what’s the big deal. The Rorschach test is almost 100 years old, and the images are in the public domain. A group of psychologists are taking legal action against Wikipedia, but I don’t think the doctors stand a chance.

What do you think? Should Wikipedia take down their Rorschach entry? Feel free to comment below.

In related news, here’s an awesome tutorial on how to make a moving Rorschach mask by the special effects gurus at Indy Mogul.

I think I’ll conduct an experiment of my own. Stare at this for a while, and tell me what you see….

Comic-Con 2009 Masquerade Winners

Comic-Con 2009 Masquerade Winners

Io9 has a gallery of the winners of the Comic-Con Masquerade contest from last weekend. Needless to say, these costumes are mind blowing. The skill and dedication of these costumers are so impressive.

If I had to choose my favorite, I guess I’d go with Beaker and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew. Heh, I love those guys! Though I’ve always wondered how Dr. Honeydew can see without any eyes.

Donkey Wears Zebra Costume at the Zoo

Donkey Wears Zebra Costume at the Zoo

Donkey Wears Zebra Costume at the Zoo

The Marah Zoo in Gaza has painted a donkey with black and white stripes, and touts their “locally made” Zebra. Oh dear.

To be fair, to say this zoo is having hard times would be a vast understatement. From the Slate article:

The idea of a zoo creating a fake zebra sounds preposterous, but this is Gaza, which, after two years of an economic blockade, is renowned for recycling, repurposing, and smuggling just about anything that can’t be imported legally. The zoo, in a way, represents all three of these coping mechanisms: a couple of house cats stand in for wild cats; the lion was drugged and smuggled through a tunnel from Egypt; and the zebra, as Berghat joked, was “locally made.”

Thanks again to Peggy Wong for the tip.
