Impatient Wait for Twilight

by FunkyLady

edward.jpg

Moms, teens and tweens (and me, of course) are biting their nails in anticipation of the Twilight film release on Friday, November 21st.

In a recent survey, Twilight was voted by Fandango moviegoers as the most anticipated film of the season.

As of 12:00 noon on October 31st, the film accounted for 51% of all daily ticket sales on Fandango, the nation’s leading moviegoer destination.

Twilight show times are expected to sell out quickly, based on a current Fandango survey of more than 5,000 moviegoers:

— 92% of respondents say they’ll see “Twilight” on opening weekend.
— 85% say they plan to see the film more than once.
— 56% are planning to see the movie with a group of friends.
— 97% have read the novel by Stephenie Meyer.
— 86% would be interested in visiting the locations where the movie
was filmed.
— 95% of the respondents to the survey are female.
— 42% of respondents are 25 or older; 58% are younger than 25.

Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg indicated that she had to condense certain aspects of the popular story, while combining supporting characters and expanding upon story features not thoroughly described in the book. But hopefully, Rosenberg’s modifications will not detract from the integrity of Edward and Bella’s story.

Summit Entertainment has announced that they’ve acquired the rights to the sequels and has already hired Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to script New Moon (Book 2) and Eclipse (Book 3). As of yet, no screenwriter has been secured for Breaking Dawn (Book 4).

For those of you who can’t get enough of the Twilight trailer, watch it here:

Who’s Watching the Watchmen?

by manny

Watchmen Movie

The upcoming Watchmen movie is generating lots of buzz, largely due to the theatrical trailer now showing before the new James Bond movie.

Here’s the new trailer. Wow, this movie looks intense!

“Maybe someone’s picking off costumed heroes…” Uh oh, that can’t end well.

Alan Moore’s Watchmen is arguably THE best, most celebrated graphic novel ever made. The story is dark, gritty and incredibily compelling.

I think the costumes look just awesome. There’s definitely a retro feel to them. The film is set in an alternate 1985, and follows a group of former vigilantes as war begins to break out between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Here are a few more publicity stills, enjoy! For more information, visit the official movie website.

Cheering for Ghostbusters

by manny

Cheerleader Ghostbusters

Here are a few great photos of the Jacksonville Jaguars cheerleaders recently performing in Ghostbuster costumes. Looks like a great show. They even had a Stay Puft Marshmellow Man dancing with them.

There’s nothing better than a sexy Ghostbuster costume to chase away any ghosts who may have come to watch the football game.

Actually, I take that back - there IS something better than a sexy Ghostbuster.

Check out these Steampunk Ghostbusters. Wow!

Ghostbusters was a huge hit in 1984, and today the franchise is as strong as ever. Atari just announced a new Ghostbusters video game, and Hollywood sources have confirmed a third Ghostbusters movie is in the works! Apparently, the writers from the NBC comedy, “The Office,” will write the script.

Sounds great, I can’t wait for a new movie!

Feeling nostalgic? Why not treat yourself to the original Ghostbusters movie? You can watch the entire movie FREE on Hulu.com:

Star Wars Cantina Song

by manny

If you’re a Star Wars fan AND a Barry Manilow Copacabana fan, then this video is too good to be true.

Not necessarily costume related, but we’ve blogged about Star Wars often enough and this is just weirdly awesome.

Zombie Evolution, Part 2: Zombie Film Timeline

by FunkyLady

whitezombieposter.jpg
1932: Premiere of White Zombie, starring Bela Lugosi. Capitalizing on previous voodoo zombie themes, it is regarded as the first legitimate zombie film ever made. Zombies are portrayed as mindless, shambling henchmen under the spell of an evil magician.

1930’s – 1960’s: Zombies, typically still voodoo-inspired, continue to appear in cinema periodically. Notable films include: I Walked with a Zombie (1943), the notorious Plan 9 from Outer space (1959) and EC Comics’ Tales from the Crypt. plan-9.JPG

1954: Publication of I am Legend, by author Richard Matheson, the story of a future Los Angeles overrun with undead bloodsucking beings, influences the zombie genre with the portrayal of a worldwide apocalypse due to an infestation. Although classified as a vampire story and referred to as “the first modern vampire novel,” it has an authoritative impact on the zombie genre through the work of George Romero. Romero, by his own admission, was greatly influenced by the novel and its 1964 adaptation when writing the film Night of the Living Dead. i-am-legend.jpg

1968: Night of the Living Dead crushes former horror film taboos to became a genre-defining classic, proving more influential on the zombie archetype than any other literary or cinematic work (see Zombie Evolution: Part 1 below)

1978: George Romero follows up Night with Dawn of the Dead. The film tells the story of four survivors of the expanding zombie apocalypse as they take refuge in an abandoned shopping mall, in Monroeville (Pennsylvania), where they intend to wait out the crisis. They clear the mall of the undead and barricade the entrances with tractor-trailers. But they have more than the undead to worry about. They also have to contend with a band of looting bikers and their own mounting tensions. Here’s a look at the trailer:

New Star Trek Movie Photos Released!

by manny

New Star Trek Movie Photos

Various websites have released exclusive photos of the upcoming Star Trek movie prequel. Above you can see (from left to right) young Checkov, Kirk, Scotty, Dr. McCoy, Sulu and Uhura.

And here’s young Spock, played by Zachary Quinto, from the popular TV show Heroes. He looks a lot like Leonard Nimoy!

To compare, here’s a photo of these same characters from the Original Series:

Star Trek: The Original Series

So what do you think of the new uniforms? Personally, I think they look… pretty good. The texture of the material makes them look a bit like thermal underwear. But it’s not too bad.

I’m pleased with most of the casting, especially Simon Pegg as Scotty. As a long-time Trek fan, I’m a little concerned that this might become Trek 90210. But I have faith in J.J. Abrams and I will certainly be at the theater on opening weekend.

Here are a few more photos. I’m glad they kept the miniskirt, it keeps things consistent with the Original Series.

Zombie Evolution: Part 1

by FunkyLady

nightoflivingdeadposter.jpg
In honor of the fast approaching World Zombie Day on October 26th, it only makes sense to pay homage to the iconic film that shot zombies into horror movie pop culture.

George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead was filmed in black and white, not to add a certain artistic tone, but because it was more cost effective. Oddly, though, the black and white tones of the movie increased the film’s heebie-jeebie quality.

Night Of The Living Dead follows two protagonists, Barbra and Ben, as they try to survive the night in a Pennsylvania farmhouse surrounded by zombies (recently dead bodies reanimated due to radio active explosion in the earth’s atmosphere and are now on a bloodthirsty hunt for human flesh). Will Barbra and Ben survive? (I’ll never tell…you’ll have to watch the movie).

Back in 1968, when Night of the Living Dead premiered, it was strongly criticized for its “explicit content.” However, in 1999, the Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry, saying it was “historically, culturally or aesthetically important.”

While Night of the living Dead wasn’t the first zombie movie produced, it was certainly the most influential in shaping the modern zombie archetype. Take a look at the trailer…if you dare!

Weird Science

by FunkyLady

igor-movie-poster.jpg

Coming to life in theaters this weekend (Friday, September 19th), the Tim Burton-esque animated horror comedy IGOR is just time to get us in the mood for Halloween!

Unfortunately for Igor, all men are not created evil. Always the evil scientist’s assistant, never the scientist, Igor (voiced by John Cusack) is about to shake up the world of weird science. Igor’s got ideas above his lowly “yes master” station…he wants to enter his own invention into the annual evil science fair!

Here’s a peek at Igor’s evil plan:

Coming Soon to a Halloween Near You

by Camilla

Halloween is less than two months away! I hope you’ve all started to prepare. Just in case you can’t think of anything, here’s a short list of what I think will be popular costumes this year.

The Joker

joker1.jpgAdmittedly, there will still be a number of Batmans running around, especially among the younger folk, but it’s clear to see that the Joker was the real attraction of the film Dark Knight, and I’ve already seen Joker costumes popping up all over the place, for events like the movie premiere and conventions. Undoubtedly a fair amount of these will be used for Halloween too. Some of them are amazingly accurate, all the way down to the green hair and smudged, worn makeup.

For the Joker, you will need a long purple coat, a light purple suit jacket, a green vest, a reptile print shirt, purple pinstripe pants, a green camouflage print tie, black shoes, and multi-colored socks (try finding Mardi Gras socks for that). Good luck! For makeup you’ll need some kind of temporary green hair dye (it’s probably more like hair paint), white joker2.pngcream makeup base, red makeup for the mouth, black makeup for the eyes, and brown makeup for creating the shadows and basically helping to smudge and dirty up the makeup job.

There are plenty of tutorials for making Joker costumes online. If you can’t sew, that’s not a problem! You can buy clothing at thrift stores that are similar to the style you need, but light in color, and then simply dye them purple or green. This article on Associated Content gives pretty good instructions for it.

Dr. Horrible

horrible.jpgIt’s not just us here at My Disguises who are obsessed with the bad doctor. Even though it’s been difficult for costumers to get the costume items they need to make an accurate Dr. Horrible costume, we know that they will do whatever it takes to get out there on Halloween night with all that mad scientist style.

We’ve posted previously about what’s needed in a Dr. Horrible costume, and there is plenty of fan discussion over at drhorrible.net.

deadbowie.jpgBut what if you want to show your love for this phenomenon, without looking like everyone else? If you’re a girl you can put together a Penny outfit. Why not go as Billy, Captain Hammer, or even better, choose another villain from the Evil League of Evil? My personal favorite is Dead Bowie, but you can choose for yourself. This post on cruftbox.com has a rundown of all the ELE characters, including screenshots of all of them.

Pirates

pirates2.jpgEven though there hasn’t been a big pirating film out this year, I think it’s safe to assume that everyone still loves pirates, and they will be strong contenders at Halloween for a few more years yet.

The great thing about pirate costumes is that you don’t have to base your costume on a specific character (unless, of course, you want to). They can be as fancy or as simple as you like, and you can make a costume for males and females.

The most simple, pared down basics for a pirate costume is a puffy shirt, and baggy pants, or a skirt for the girls, if desired, and a sash to tie around your waist or head. pirates3.jpg From there, you can go on to add hats or bandanas, fancy pirate coats, vests, corsets for the girls, big boots, fat leather belts, jabots, weapons, lots of jewelry, and any other piratey accessory! Make sure to decorate things with skulls and crossbones—I found some awesome silver skull and crossbones buttons at a fabric store the other day.

pirates4.jpgIf you’re thinking about historically accurate pirate costumes, I’ve found that the Pirates of the Caribbean films are actually pretty good references, and corroborate a lot of the research I’ve done on the period (mid-to-late 1700s); with the exception of most of Elizabeth’s costumes, and some of the more obviously fantasy-based costumes. Of course, you can do your own research by searching online or checking out fashion history books.

And while I’m on the topic, let’s give another reminder that Talk Like a Pirate Day is just a few days away! We’ll hear more from FunkyLady on that soon.

Star Wars Parody

by FunkyLady

star-wars-robot-chicken.jpg
Well, we’ve reached the end of our Star Wars blog fest. In honor of today’s theatrical premiere of The Clone Wars, I’d like to finish up here with another type of animated Star Wars film…the parody.

I’d never heard of Robot Chicken before yesterday, because I don’t have cable television. But I’m glad I ran across this hilarious little morsel on the internet.

Cartoon Network’s popular Adult Swim series, Robot Chicken, created this 2007 Star Wars parody using stop motion animated toys & puppets. Funny man, Seth Green, directed the 22 minute episode which was nominated for an Emmy. It’s available for purchase on Amazon.com, but you can check out some clips right here:

If this merely wet your appetite for Star Wars parodies, you’ll be happy to know that there’s another Robot Chicken Star Wars episode in the works!

Many members of the voice cast from the first special, including original Star Wars actors Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams will lend their voices to the sequel.

robot-chicken2.jpg

This time around, the focus of the show will explore the stories of the bounty hunters. Robot Chicken Star Wars, Episode II, will premier on the Cartoon Network November 16th.

Star Wars: Attack of the Blog

by manny

We’re continuing with our Star Wars theme this week. I thought it would be fun to show some Youtube clips of great costumes and creativity.

Star Wars (Sweded): A Cardboard Hope
We’ve talked about Sweding before. This video was made for the popular BeKindReWind’s sweding competition, and it’s very well done.

Next we have a fine procession of costumers at the 2008 Motor City Con in Novi, MI. Darth Vader looks terrific, but what really impresses me is the costume of General Grievous.

Star Wars: Attack of the Lightsaber Clone
And finally, the good people of Backyard FX, the masters of DIY filmmaking, put together a funny lightsaber video along with a tutorial for making your own weapon. Great stuff!

You know, George Lucas invented the lightsaber over 30 years ago. It’s rather hard to believe that our top scientists haven’t been able to make one for real. What’s up with that?

Star Wars According to Disney

by FunkyLady

large-sw-muppet-figurines.jpg

Disney knows a good thing when they see it. So they came up with their own line of Disney / Muppets Star Wars action figures.

starwarsdisneyfiguresbig.jpg starwarsmuppets22.jpg

The Disney action figures will be sold individually for $9.95, and include Mickey Mouse as Anakin, Minnie Mouse as Amidala, Goofy as Jar Jar, Donald Duck as Darth Maul, and Stitch as Yoda, available for sale inside Disney Theme Park gift shops.

Muppets Star Wars figures will be packaged separately or in a boxed set. Characters include Kermit as Luke Skywalker, Miss Piggy as Princess Leia, Beaker as C3PO, Fozzie as Chewbacca, Rizzo as Yoda, and Gonzo as Darth Vader. These figures are also for sale sale inside Disney Theme Park gift shops.

Just when you thought you were done collecting action figures…
