s-CRY-ed: Straight Cougar Cosplay

by manny

CougarCar

Here’s something for fans of s-CRY-ed. At a recent car show in Utah, MD writer Chajiko went dressed as Straight Cougar. She won 3rd place in their costume contest, that’s very cool!

She looks great standing next to that car. A little bird told me that it was actually a red car, turned pink in Photoshop, but we don’t have to tell anyone about that… :)

Well done, Chajiko!

God Save the Queen: Completed Green Lantern Costume

by manny

custom-green-lantern-cosplay

I recently posted some photos of an incredible custom Green Lantern costume made by God Save the Queen Fashions.

This costume was made on commission for a serious cosplayer at Comic-Con. Here are some final photos! Wow, this turned out so great, I bet he is just thrilled. Photos by LJinto.

Doesn’t owning a custom-tailored costume sound fun, and really, really tempting? Wow, the possibilities are endless. It’s amazing to think that her team can make ANYTHING, any costume at all (even regular clothing).

I had a chance to ask her a little bit about her commission work. Here is more information if you’re interested in a commissioned costume:

There isn’t really a set price for a costume like this as everyone is a different size. Since everything I make is custom fitted to each client, it is difficult to set a price in stone. For example, a GL costume for someone that is 5′2 and 100lbs will be cheaper than the same costume fitted to someone that is 6′0 and 250lbs.

gstqf-catherineIf you’re ever interested in getting a costume for yourself (Green Lantern or otherwise), the commission request form on my site is the best way to get detailed pricing for serious inquiries:

I want to thank Catherine L. Jones, the owner of GSTQF, for sending in these photos and answering questions about her fine work!

Visit her site to get your own custom costume or to just admire her awesome gallery! You can also follow her on Twitter: @gstqfashions.

Mad Men Costume Party Photos

by manny

mad-men-group

AMC’s TV show Mad Men sure is getting popular. It’s so interesting to see a realistic portayal of life in the 1960’s. It’s such a great show. The impressive fashion also gets a lot of attention, to the point where it’s even affecting the styles of today.

Apparently lots of fans like to watch Mad Men in costume, by having viewing parties where everyone dresses up in their best 1960’s fashion. Doesn’t that sound fun?

Gawker has a nice collection of fan-submitted Mad Men cosplay photos. I’m quite impressed! Visit Gawker.com to view their full gallery.

Superhero Costume Wedding

by manny

superhero-wedding-1

Last weekend in the UK, Neil and Sharon Vaughn got married dressed as Batman and Wonder Woman! Everyone in the wedding party wore a superhero costumes, how awesome is that?

Best man was Robin while The Joker was master of ceremonies with the Powerpuff girls as bridesmaids. Among the guests in Paignton, Devon, were Superman, the Incredibles, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk and Captain America.

Neil said: “We’re not particularly traditional, and we wanted to have a fun day with our friends.”

Congratulations to the happy couple!

Photos from Harry Potter Infinitus Conference

by manny

I always love hearing from Jonathon Rosenthal, the head organizer of The Group That Shall Not Be Named.

His Harry Potter group went to Infinitus 2010 in Orlando a couple of weeks ago, and he was kind enough to tag a set of cosplay photos on Flickr.

What a great guy — and what awesome costumes! This looks like SO MUCH fun!

Stabbed-in-the-Eye-at-Comic-Con Costume

by manny

I definitely laughed out loud when I saw these clever costumes. As you may have heard, last weekend at Comic-Con a man got arrested for stabbing someone with a pen. Apparently, they were fighting over seats or something, and the victim got scratched near his eye.

Soon, the story became wildly exaggerated, and rumors spread that the guy had his eye poked out, and there was blood everywhere, etc. I have to laugh and admire the quick thinking of these cosplayers for putting together these costumes so quickly.

I don’t mean to laugh at the incident. Violence at cons cannot be tolerated. The stabber did get arrested and charged with assault with a lethal weapon — it does sound serious.

From LA Times:

“Two friends had an argument and one guy ended up going to the hospital with a scratch near his eye.”

One of the men reportedly struck the other man near the eye with a pen. The man who suffered the cut near his eye reportedly asked to be examined at the hospital as a precaution.

Rumors circulating the internet of a fan stabbing another attendee in the eye over coveted seats, and of a victim clad in a ” Harry Potter T-shirt soaked in blood,” are inaccurate, according to authorities.

Ash Costume from Evil Dead

by manny

Evil_Dead_Photoshoot_3_by_Pyro_The_Maniac

I always enjoy posting photos of Courtney Coombs and her excellent costumes. Recently, she did a cosplay photoshoot as Ash from the Evil Dead series.

As you can see, Courtney wields a mean chainsaw! Great work!

This costume was such a pain, not because the clothing itself poses any kind of challenge but because it’s the accesories that make it. I tried so hard to get a movie quality chainsaw hand, but in the end I just made one out of milk cartons, a sheet of plastic, PVC pipe and some cardboard. The gun is made from an old leg off of a piece of furniture. Origins of which are unknown.

Very little makeup in these photos, just some mascara and spot cover. For the scars I used liquid latex and some games workshop inks, red and brown to be precise.

Beautiful Princess Leia Costume

by manny

gentle-giant-princess-leia-costume-3

Check out his beautiful Princess Leia costume, made by Anaria Zarrel, aka Kristy Glasgow. I’ve recently started following her on Twitter and I’m just blown away by her work.

gentle-giant-princess-leiaShe has a million awesome costumes on her website, along with excellent descriptions of how she makes each one. I hope to highlight more of her great work in the future!

This Princess Leia costume was modeled after the “Gentle Giant” animation-style maquette.

What a perfect costume!

As an avid Star Wars fan and Gentle Giant collector, I fell in love with the animated Princess Leia maquette the moment it was announced. It has been center place in my collection ever since, recently joined by the Padme’ maquette. I have wanted to make the costume for a long time, I’m really happy to have finally had the opportunity. As always, I learnt more about working with lycra, and larger hair pieces. It is very comfortable to wear, and a lot of fun :)
